ANESTHESIOLOGY AND INTENSIVE CARE

Anesthesia is not just being put to sleep.

It is the management of a patient's safety — from the preparation before surgery, through the operation itself, and into recovery.

About

I graduated from Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and completed my specialist training in 1995 in the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of the same faculty. A DAAD scholarship awarded in 1992 took me to several centres in Germany; that period shaped both my professional outlook and the international ties I have kept ever since.

I became associate professor in 2003 and professor in 2009, and worked at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1995 to 2022. Since 2022 I have been with the Acıbadem Healthcare Group, where I head the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University School of Medicine.

Expertise

  • 01

    Thoracic Surgery Anesthesia

Managing breathing during operations on the lungs, oesophagus and mediastinum — among the most physiologically complex fields in anesthesia.

  • 02

    One-Lung Ventilation

The advanced technique in which the lungs are ventilated independently so the surgical field can be opened.

  • 03

    Postoperative Pain Management

Individualised multimodal pain treatment, so patients can move early, breathe deeply and stay comfortable.

Surgery Journey

  1. Preparation before surgery is the stage where anesthetic safety and the speed of recovery are largely determined.

  2. Not every operation calls for the same anesthetic. Why the management differs across six surgical fields.

  3. The period after surgery is where recovery is consolidated; comfort, pain management and early movement shape this stage.

What Is Anesthesiology and Intensive Care?

Anesthesiology is not only about putting patients to sleep; it is the medical discipline that manages a patient's vital functions throughout surgery.

Anesthesia Guide

Types of Anesthesia

  • What Is General Anesthesia?

Under general anesthesia consciousness is switched off in a controlled way, while pain, muscle relaxation and vital functions are managed throughout surgery.

  • What Is Sedation?

Under sedation you stay conscious but deeply relaxed; it makes endoscopy and minor procedures comfortable.

  • What Is Local Anesthesia?

Only the area being treated is numbed. It is the most common anesthetic method, used in dental work and minor surgery.

  • What Is Spinal Anesthesia?

A single injection that produces rapid, complete numbness in the lower half of the body; frequently preferred in orthopedic surgery.

  • What Is Epidural Anesthesia?

Given in the lower back and best known for pain relief in childbirth — how does epidural anesthesia actually work?

  • Regional Anesthesia and Nerve Blocks

Targeting the nerves that supply a specific region makes postoperative pain management considerably easier.
